We Are Being Watched

A provocative introduction to the Meruqel worldview and its questions about observation, creation, suffering, meaning, and responsibility.

We Are Being Watched invites the reader to consider a radically different explanation for life and humanity’s place within it. Meruqel begins with a startling premise: life on Earth was intentionally created or engineered by intelligent beings beyond our world—the Makers—and those beings continue to observe what life has become.

But Meruqel does not describe the Makers as gods. They are not presented as all-knowing, all-powerful, or morally perfect. They do not demand worship, promise justice, assign every person a destiny, or guarantee that suffering will eventually be made right. Instead, Meruqel asks what follows if our creators are powerful but limited beings operating within the same reality we inhabit.

Why would intelligent beings create life? Why would they continue watching it? Why does a designed world contain disease, cruelty, conflict, predation, and suffering? Why are human beings capable of extraordinary compassion and extraordinary brutality? And if no higher power guarantees justice, what responsibility falls upon us?

Rather than offering comforting answers simply because they are comforting, We Are Being Watched explores the consequences of a universe in which humanity may not be the center of creation—and yet our lives can still possess profound meaning.

The book challenges inherited assumptions about religion, morality, purpose, and human importance while offering something in their place: agency. If justice is not guaranteed by the universe, we can create it. If suffering is not automatically prevented from above, reducing it can become our responsibility. If meaning is not assigned to us, we can build it through what we choose, protect, create, discover, repair, and leave behind.

Meruqel asks the reader to look at ordinary reality again—and consider whether the world might be stranger, larger, and more consequential than we have been taught to believe.
